The Blue Boards / Main Forums / General R&B; Chat / Favourite R&B album 2006?
Which album gets your vote for best of the year. Mine goes to James Hunter's People Gonna Talk but this plenty of others plugging for that one in this and other forums so here are some others

Solomon Burke - Nashville - good but not truly great
George Soule - Take A Ride - great vocals but not songs not always as strong as you would have expected
Amy Winehouse - Back To Black - great soul album for this or any other year
Robert Randolph - Colorblind - I liked it, although I know the Shades site and others thought it a little weak
Eric Bibb - Diamond Days - Because every Bibb album is great, and this is no exception
Keb Mo - Suitcase - I think this is import only? Anyway, ditto sentiments above
Kelly Joe Phelps - Tunesmith Retrofit - usual excellent fare from Phelps
Buddy Guy - Bring Em In - Another that got mixed reviews but this is a great R&B (as opposed to pure blues) album

.....and I'm sure a whole lot of others when I think about it a little more

Robert Cray's Live from Across the Pond

Only came out the back end of the year and I believe it's Cray's frst live album - it's excellent, although I don't agree with all those who say he's better live than in the studio. His early studio albums in particular were great. Anyway, this is a double CD and has a great many of my favourites from Cray's 80s work and it's well worth the entry fee. My favourite bles release in 2006

How about The Road to Escondido from J.J. Cale and Eric Clapton.

Despite the fact that there are an array of guest musicians, this is a surprisingly restrained affair that provides a great setting for these two to shine. Some of the best work from both for a long time. Cale provides most of the material, and it's largley the country blues we expect from him - you're not going to get a change of direction at this stage in his career!
No tension, no egos (don't appear to be anyway) - just great playing, excellent interplay and in the main fine songs.

Got a horrible feeling this might have come out back end of 2005. But my favourite album of 2006 was still Sherman Robertson - Guitar Man Live. Great playing and ample enough evidence that orthodox blues is alive and well. Can't wait for his next studio album and a significant marketing push - you never know

Another fave is the aforementioned James Hunter - People Gonna Talk. Although it wasn't as good as some have said, and it is undeniably derivative, it's still packed with great songs, he's a very fine singer and not too shabby a guitar player - recommended

Hey, new to the forum here, happy to chat with yall!

My choice would have to be Amy Winehouse, I know its a bandwagon choice since she blew up huge last year but her tracks are just so darn catchy.

Bandwagon maybe...but it is a very fine album. Not hard to hold with tradition and come up with something new. Very often comes across as pastiche but Winehouse pulls it off with flair. Helps that she is a genuinely fine singer, unlike so many of her contemporaries

Beverley Knight's "Music City Soul" is another good effort in the same vein - a little bit more traditional but on the whole she pulls it off - even if there is a blatant rip off (tribute?) to Nutbush City Limits in 'Black Butta'. Good to see such a fine singer produce an album free of the dross most R&B passes for these days!
