Charlie Gillett - Making Tracks (The History of Atlantic Records)

Making Tracks
Pointer Buy Now
One of the best histories of big business and the recording industry you are ever likely to find. An excellent behind the scenes study of Atlantic Records from its inception as a part time hobby of Herb Abramson through to its critical role in popular music as one of the leading labels of the 50s and 60s.
Lot’s of excellent information on Atlantic luminaries such as Ray Charles, Aretha, Bobby Darin, Crosby, Stills Nash and Young and Led Zeppelin.

Other than Jerry Wexler's autobiography (very partial but highly enjoyable), probably the best overview of Atlantic Records you're ever likely to read.
At the time of writing, you can still get this in the UK. Buy it while that still holds good!
