The Literature File -
Peter Guralnick - Feel Like Going Home
Subtitled Portraits In Blues and Rock and Roll, this is contemporary music through the words of the men who made it happen - including Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Johnny Shines, Jerry Lee Lewis and the vastly underrated Charlie Rich. Guralnick brings it all to life with his own in depth perceptive and authoritative research. The book also includes a thumbnail history of the blues and a close look at the Chess Record label (before the fall!). As with much of Guralnick's material, it's through the portraits of the artists that we learn not just about them, but also about the times in which they lived and the context of the music they made. That's what makes this and his other books "Sweet Soul Music" and "Lost Highway" such essential reading for anyone with the slightest interest in R&B; and American popular music
A very special and important book...
