The Top 10 R&B Soul Songs Of All Time

The best Rhythm and Blues songs of all time is a bit hard to pin down, there are so many good ones. Here’s a list of our top 10 to get you thinking, if you have any suggestions for ones that have been missed out, let us know in the comments below.

It’s almost impossible to put these songs in order, we’ve put the ones we think are best at the top but in terms of which one is number one or everything in between, we’ll let you decide.

1) Michael Jackson - ‘Rock with You’

This Disco song from his ‘Off the Wall’ album was a number one hit and helped him announce himself as a solo artist.

2) Prince - ‘Adore’

This song was never actually released as a single, which surprises many people but it is a truly great slow jam of a hit that most people call one of Prince’s greatest songs.

3) Mary J. Blige - ‘Real Love’

‘Real Love’ was the stand out song on Mary’s debut album “What’s the 411?’. The album was a trendsetter with real quality, so to be the stand out song takes something. It still sounds modern today.

4) Boyz II Men - ‘I’ll Make Love to You’

This song was number one on the Billboard charts for 14 weeks and was actually replaced at number one by another single by Boyz II Men, ‘On Bended Knee’. This song was a hit from the moment it was released.

5) Stevie Wonder - ‘As’

No explanation is needed in regards to the genius of Stevie Wonder and this song is just more proof of that. His songs could be anywhere on this list. This is an upbeat soulful love song that has gravitas.

6) Luther Vandross - ‘Never Too Much’

Just hearing the title of the song makes you want to sing it, it is such a classic R&B soul song. Whilst Luther Vandross is more well know for slower songs, this up-tempo hit was a smash in a post-disco era.

7) Donny Hathaway - ‘A Song for You’

It’s the soulfulness of this song and the way that is was sung by Donny Hathaway that helps make this song so great. It was actually a cover, recorded by Leon Russell and shaped into something amazing by Donny Hathaway.

8) Soul II Soul - ‘Back to Life’

Released in 1989 this is a dance floor classic that when you look at the lyrics is actually a sad love song.

9) Faith Evans - ‘Soon As I Get Home’

This is a slow jam from her first album, released in 1995. Faith Evans has a distinctive voice and writes too. This song shows her versatility at its best.

10) Al Green - ‘Lets Stay Together’

A very well known song that has stood the test of time. This is probably the most famous song that Al Green recorded and perhaps rightly so. A smooth classic with a sound that doesn’t age.
